Abstract: For fixed compact connected Lie groups H subseteq G, we provide a polynomial time algorithm to compute the multiplicity of a given irreducible representation of H in the restriction of an irreducible representation of G. In 1966-67 he gave a course at Oxford on representation theory and its applications, the notes of which were published in 1978 as Unitary Group Representations in Physics, Probability and Number Theory. Representation theory is the part of Group Theory which is used in the main applications. Matrices acting on the members of a vector space are assigned to every element of a group. Our algorithm is based on a finite difference formula which makes the multiplicities amenable to Barvinok's algorithm for counting integral points in polytopes. This should be read by the physicists concurrently, or shortly after the one years series in graduate quantum mechanics. The Kronecker coefficients of RT); Quantum Physics (quant-ph). €Groups, Representations and Physics,” by H. I have seen the theory of I'm not saying that it's great, only that it's not bad for a physics book, and that I don't know a better place. It is primarily concerned with group algebra and matrix representations which is really what group theory in physics is all about one can read this book; it is usually not necessary to decipher it. Representation Theory and Particle Theory in Quantum Physics is being discussed at Physics Forums. I am familiar with the representation theory of finite groups and Lie groups/algebra from the mathematical perspective, and I am wondering how quantum mechanics/quantum field theory uses concepts from representation theory. The book first introduces the concept of a group and the characteristics that are imperative for developing group theory as applied to high-energy physics.
